PADI Advanced Open Water Diver Course

Duration – 2 days 9.30am – 4.30pm

The PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course is the next step after completion of the Open Water course and you don’t have to be experienced to start the course, it is designed so you can go straight into it after the PADI Open Water Diver course.

The Advanced Open Water Diver course helps you increase your confidence and improve your diving skills so you can become more comfortable in the water.

The PADI Advanced diver course is a great way to get more dives under your belt while continuing to learn new skills under the supervision of our diving instructors. The course consists of 5 open water dives each of which are designed to present tasks underwater, like underwater photography or wreck diving. You will learn that there is far more to diving than you may have once thought.

Core Dives

  • Underwater navigation
  • Deeper water diving (typically anywhere from 18-30 metres / 60-100 feet)
  • A choice of 3 elective task orientated dives.

The Benefits: You Choose

The best reason for taking the Advanced Open Water Diver course is that you will choose from a selection of elective dives to complete your course. You can try your hand at digital underwater photography, wreck diving, night diving, diving with underwater scooters, peak performance buoyancy and much more.

What You Learn

The PADI advanced diver course consists of two core dives, one deep dive and one navigation, these are mandatory to becoming an advanced open water diver. For the deep dive you will learn the practical aspects of deep diving and more about the physiological effects of deeper diving. Once completed, you will have experience of diving down to depths of up to 30 metres in open water.

For your navigation dive you will learn to navigate using an underwater compass, kick-cycles, visual reference points and time. You will be able to successfully navigate a square pattern underwater and measure distances you travel underwater.

The remaining 3 dives is your choice; however ice diving is not so easy to achieve here in Tenerife. The Canary Islands offers a fantastic underwater play ground, with our wrecks and deep drop-offs and of course the beautiful array of Atlantic marine life. Here is a list of the elective dives you can choose from.

  • Digital underwater photographer
  • Diver propulsion vehicle (DPV)
  • Wreck diving
  • Night diving
  • Boat diving
  • Underwater naturalist
  • Peak performance buoyancy

The diving gear you will use

You use all the basic diving gear including an underwater compass. Depending on which three elective dives you pick you will be introduced to a whole new variety of dive gear, from underwater cameras to DPVs (underwater scooters), dive lights, dry suits and lift bags.

You will have the opportunity to purchase all sorts of accessories from the Wreck n Reef dive shop. We will only give you unbiased and trusted advice on what to purchase. Our aim is to help you make the right purchase.

Recommended items to purchase as a PADI Advanced Open Water Diver:

  • Underwater compass
  • Rash vest or Wetsuit
  • Dive computer
  • Underwater signaling device

Course structure... What you can expect

The PADI Advanced Open Water Course is highly flexible and the schedule is only established once it is determined what interests you; however if you feel a little indecisive here is a package we can suggest.

Day 1: Dive 1 – Peak performance buoyancy. This is a great way to start the course so you can fine tune your buoyancy in shallow water first before we get stuck into the more task demanding dives. It is also good if you have not dived in a while so you can brush up on some of your skills.

Day 1: Dive 2 – Digital Underwater Photography. This is by far the most popular elective dive. If you are desperate to show off your underwater experiences to friends and family then we will hone your skills with a camera so you get the perfect shot.

70% of our students go onto to complete the Digital Underwater Photography specialist course after completing the advanced course and 30% of our students end up purchasing their own Digital Underwater camera from the Wreck n Reef dive shop.

Day 1: Dive 3 – Night Dive. If you have already got the bug for scuba diving then get ready to become a full blown enthusiast. Besides the strange and wonderful marine life that come out at night, night diving can be best described as a “Trippy Experience” seeing the lights and luminous glow sticks underwater and in the dark makes night diving an extraordinary experience.

One of the most enjoyable aspects of night diving is when we come out of the water and ask a tourist “Excuse me! Is this Tenerife?” To see the amazement on their faces is priceless...

Day 2: Dive 4 – Deep diving. To build your confidence and extend your diving certification to 30 meters deep diving is mandatory for the PADI Advanced course. You will learn the techniques and procedures required to safely dive in deeper water and learn about the effects of Nitrogen Narcosis.

Day 2: Dive 5 – Navigation. You may already be familiar with the challenges of finding your way under water. The Navigation dive is also a mandatory dive for the PADI Advanced course and is often over looked for its importance. We highly recommend that you continue your diving education with the Under Water Navigation specialist course.
